Signs My Manual Transmission’s Clutch Is Going Bad

To prevent clutch problems, bring your car, truck, or utility vehicle to our shop every 6,000 miles so we can adjust the clutch. This also gives us an opportunity to inspect the clutch to see if any of the mechanisms need to be replaced. Both of these things will extend the life you get out of the clutch. This being said, if you keep your vehicle for a long time, there may come a point when you need to replace the clutch. Here are signs the clutch is going bad.

Changes in the Pedal

The clutch can start to feel different and the bite point can change when the internal mechanisms of the clutch have worn out. Unfortunately, we may have to replace the clutch if we cannot rebuild it. Specifically, the clutch may start to sink when you press down on it. It will feel soft and squishy. In some cases, the clutch may also feel too hard. Either way, the clutch needs immediate attention.

In addition, and as we mentioned above, the bite point can also change. This is the place in the clutch depression when you shift gears. An old clutch will increase the bite point. In other words, the point in the clutch will get higher. If you notice that this has happened with your clutch, bring your vehicle to our shop. The sooner we address the problem the less chance of a need for clutch replacement.

Hot or Burning Odors

An old clutch can also start to overheat. This happens because the clutch slips. What this means is that the clutch disengages by itself after it has initially engaged. When the clutch is engaged, the power shifts from the engine to the transmission. If it slips, it will start to overheat. Consequently, you will smell burning odors inside your vehicle. This means the clutch is too hot.

Problems With the Gears

When we say problems with the gears, we mean problems shifting the gears. Unfortunately, if the clutch has slipped, the power has returned to the engine. Consequently, you may grind the gears if you shift them. The gear shift may also feel stiff. In fact, it may feel as if you have to force the gears to get them to shift. A slipping clutch will also create problems with your vehicle’s acceleration.
